Why does the Polyline Selection Area tool not let me place points close together?

It's a large image but when drawing the selection area, it becomes impossible to place the points closely while zoomed out to better see what we're drawing the edges around. I can't really attach a screenshot of the tool NOT working properly, but it should be able to place points in finer detail that what is currently allowed and there seem to be no tool options for the "Polyline" selection area tool. The image is very large so it is not a question of the resolution being too large.

The translation may be unstable and the content may be out of sync, but does this mean that you can't add control points near control points you've already created?

Please check whether "Continuous curve - Add/delete control points during creation" is checked in the Sub Tool Detail palette.
If it is checked, try unchecking it and check the behavior.
Also, even when it's checked, you should be able to add control points near existing points by holding down the alt key and clicking.

Are you talking about checking View menu > Selection Launcher?

That does not look like something made with polyline selection. That looks more like magic wand or selection from layer. Polyline tool allows you to place point on top of each other as long as it is not extra quick click (double click means ENTER)
