Textures don't work / show in my custom brushes

I recently approached custom brush making after spending lots of money on other people's custom brushes, but I am having some issues with making the textures appear in the brush stroke.
I import my textures from jpg files, set the layer to either color or gray, then save it as a texture, but when I apply it on a brush it doesn't appear, no matter which options I modify or I choose. How do I make it show? How do the textures work in CSP?
I'll attach an image as an example, where I can't have the texture displaying at all. Left are the brush strokes and right is the texture used.

    incorrect
    Open the jpeg image
Select "Change brightness to transparency" from the Edit menu
    Do this
After that, register it in the material palette
Check "Use as paper texture" in the material properties
