How do you let a custom brush be any colour?

I'm making some custom brushes using image as a material, and I want it to be able to change colour depending on what colour the user has suggested - however when I use it it only comes out in the colour of the image material itself. Does anyone know how to fix this?

In the layer property palette, set the expression color of the layer to "gray" or "monochrome"
Please make brush and register as brush tip shape
When the expression color of the layer is "color", the material of the color as it is completed
