the function convert brightness to opacity

I heard that applying this function on the layer with your line art/art will make the layer transparent so that your next strokes of colours won’t cover the art, but it doesn’t seem to be working for me :( am I doing something wrongly

    Do you mean "convert brightness to transparency" in the edit menu? I'm sorry if I'm wrong.
    This converts brightness to transparency, so for example colored areas will only convert brightness to transparency. (It doesn't matter what color it is painted in)
    It is mainly used when extracting only the line part from a picture drawn with black lines on white paper.
    The left image below is the original image. Light blue and orange convert the brightness of the color into transparency. The white part is 100% bright, so it's completely transparent. The black part has a brightness of 0%, so it becomes opaque.

    Use that command with [Raster Layer].
    This is not possible with [Image material layer].

    Please try after converting to a raster layer from the layer menu → [Rasterize].
