Why does it ask me to activate again on the SAME device?

I bought the one year version but every time I update the application, it asks me to deactivate another device that I am using but it is the same. As the number of times I can deactivate the account is limited, I'm afraid it won't let me use it later. Also the things I had before disappear. It's like having the program twice on the same device! Help!
