I used the selection tool so I could just alter and colour one section, but when I went to blur and blend the colours, its acts like a pen/eraser now, just adding or removing more of one solid colour. How do I blend the colours while using the selection tool?

Rasterize and try using blending sub-tools on the raster layer.
