How do I edit duplicated layers in clip studio paint pro? (animation)

I'm working on a very basic animation in Clip Studio Paint Pro, and I'm trying to duplicate my base drawing and then edit it for my future frames in my animation, so it's smooth and isn't shaky. However, any time I try to duplicate my original layer, it copies and pastes the image onto another layer, and then won't let me edit that layer. And by edit, I mean anything as simple as drawing or erasing something on the duplicated layer. I'm doing it on a Mac, and I've been trying to duplicate the layer by selecting layer, and then duplicate layer. Am I doing something wrong? Clip Studio Paint is still relatively new to me, so any help would be greatly appreciated!
