I want to paint the layer mask with a non-transparent gray color

I'm using Clip Studio Paint EX and I have a question about how to use layer masks.
I want to add a layer mask to a layer that has been colored, and then use the pen tool or similar to color the layer mask and manipulate the mask area.

1. I selected a transparent color and colored the layer mask, and got the results I wanted.

2. I then used the pen tool (G pen) to color in black, white, and gray other than the transparent color, but the mask layer could not be colored.

Do I need to use any special functions to color the mask layer with the pen tool or similar in black, white, and gray as in 2?
Or maybe I've pressed a key that normally works but now prevents me from coloring the layer mask in colors other than transparent?

When drawing on CLIP STUDIO PAINT's layer masks,
drawing in black will not mask.
Drawing with the eraser tool or a transparent color will mask.
    To achieve a specific opacity,
adjust the opacity of the brush instead of grayscale.
When doing so, if the brush blending mode is "Normal",
you will only be able to draw in the direction of darker opacity, so
you will need to select "Transparency replacement" or similar.

However, it is possible to apply level corrections,
tone curves, and other effects to layer masks.

Thank you for your reply, Akizora Hiroki.
I now understand that the basic method of using layer masks is different from the method of operating layer masks in Photoshop.
I tried out the specific operations you taught me and was able to operate them without any discomfort, so I will end my question here.
Thank you very much for your time.

I would also like to thank nino88 and usapyon.
